Although
the first definite reference to the existence of a chapel in Teddington
is in 1217, it is not until 1511 that the name of the incumbent
is known – Sir
Thomas of Todyngton (“Sir” being the title given to
ordinary clergymen). Stephen Hales, who was Perpetual Curate from
1709 to his death in 1761 and one of the most famous British scientists
of his time, was apparently the first resident incumbent.
